What Is Reiki?

A Beginner’s Guide to Reiki Energy Healing

Reiki is a gentle energy healing practice that supports the body's natural ability to restore balance and relaxation.

Originating in Japan in the early 20th century, Reiki has become widely recognized around the world as a complementary wellness practice that promotes harmony within the mind, body, and spirit.

At the Northern New York Reiki Association, we teach Reiki with an expanded perspective that includes principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine, helping students understand how Reiki relates to the flow of Qi energy in the body.

What Happens During a Reiki Session?

During a Reiki session:

  • The individual usually lies comfortably on a treatment table.

  • The practitioner places their hands lightly on or slightly above specific areas of the body.

  • Sessions typically last between 45–60 minutes.

Many individuals report feeling:

  • Deep relaxation

  • Warmth or gentle energy sensations

  • Mental calmness

  • Emotional balance
